This is called Sarrayat, a camping tradition taken from long stint cultural tradition of Kuwait.

The Sarrayat Season starts from November to April every year at time winter season kicks-in. There are eighteen (18) camping sites identified from area of North, West and South of Kuwait. The locals with age of 21 and above who wish to do camping are permitted to rent up to 1000 square meter with a rent fee of 50KD as authorized by the municipality. Participants are reminded of certain environmental protection to be followed for the preservation of the camping sites.

Locals are excited to join on this popular long-time tradition. Their activities include bonfire as the night is cold and chilling while doing barbeque on the side, offering Arabic coffee (qahwa) on the other hand and sesha session together with family and friends. Ladies activities express their love for the art of henna painting. Outdoor activities include ATVs, sand boarding, carousel and roller coaster rides that will be loved by the kids and young families. More families gather at the afternoon until night time to relax after a long day of work.

As I am passing on this area of Abdaly, I said to myself that this place is amazing for they preserve their greatest cultural heritage despite the adverse of modern influence. You will see tents lining-up with gilts of lights that look like a theme park covering the desert landscape. On day time, you will see vehicle “baqala” shop selling different items from charcoal, live chickens and goats, fruits and vegetables, sesha bottles and other camping merchandise.

This Kuwait cultural tradition embraces solidarity of the family with respect to their cultural heritage. This is a lesson learned for us spectators that there is a historical value of seeing tents during November up to April of every year. It is great to know as expat in Kuwait that what we see from a far is long valued tradition.

Long live Kuwait!
