After the twenty-nine (29) days of fasting and sacrifice, the crescent moon has been sighted using telescope that marks the declaration of Eid Al Fitr for all Islamic Nations. The Saudi Supreme Court announces the sighting of the moon and the declaration of the holiday. The social media has been filled with different greetings expressing the celebration of Eid Al Fitr. Most of family and friends in Gulf Countries are now being one with the celebration.

Eid Al Fitr is from Arabic word means “Festival of Breaking the Fast”. It is a festival being celebrated by Muslims all over the world that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The conclusion of 29 or 30 day fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadan will depend on the sighting of new moon. The day of Eid falls on the first day of Shawwal month in Hijri Calendar.

Eid is being declared usually for three days by Muslim countries as an official public holiday. However, some countries in the Middle East like UAE and Saudi Arabia are celebrating for longer days.

Iftar Delights, Guide for Healthy Living https://blogs.jerichosplace.com/2019/05/06/iftar-delights-guide-for-healthy-living/ https://blogs.jerichosplace.com/2019/05/06/iftar-delights-guide-for-healthy-living/#comments Mon, 06 May 2019 17:09:49 +0000 http://jerichosplace.com/?p=3820 This Ramadan, most of our Muslim brothers and sisters are taking fasting. Selecting essential foods is necessary and below is the My Plate Guide.

“My Plate” is a designed for healthy eating which consists of basic Five Food Groups such as Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Dairy, Protein. Before you eat, think first what goes on your plate. You should eat the right number of calories, limit your sugar and salt intakes, use small amounts of fat as they may contain high calories and drink water instead of sugar drinks or soda.

Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetable, make half your whole grains. For proteins, go for lean choices such as grill, roast or boil instead of frying. Ensure you drink your dairy by using low fat products or fat free.

Grains are foods made from rice, potato, oats, wheat and barley such as pasta, corn, cereals, bread and legumes. These food group are important sources of energy for the body including dietary fiber, Vitamin B and minerals.

How to increase whole grain foods;

  • Use whole grain flour or oatmeal for making cookies and other baked products
  • Choose whole wheat bread and brown rice instead of white rice and bread.
  • Try adding bulgur or quinoa to your meal
  • Buy snacks made of whole grain cereal bars or crackers.

Vegetable groups are any raw, cooked, canned or frozen vegetable. It is highly recommended to consume at least 2 to 3 cups of vegetables per day. Vegetables are naturally low in calories and they are important source of various nutrients like Vitamin A & C, potassium, folate and dietary fiber. Regular eating of vegetables may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes and heart diseases.

How to prepare vegetable choices;

  • Select red and orange vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, capsicum. For dark green vegetable select spinach, broccoli and green leafy vegetables.
  • Try cooking fresh vegetables instead of canned or frozen.
  • Prepare a vegetables snacks in a bowl such as celery, cucumber, carrot and mixed capsicum by dipping in a low-fat sauce.

Fruit groups are any dried, fresh, canned, frozen or 100% fruit juice. It is recommended to take 1 to 2 cups per day of fruits. Fruits are source of antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, E & K which help to fight cancerous cells in the body.

How to increase fruit intake;

  • Choose dried fruits for a snack like dried mangoes, dried pineapple or mixed dried fruits.
  • Blend fresh fruit with low-fat yogurt or fat-free.
  • Add banana or peaches on your cereal.
  • Select fresh fruits rather than canned juices to avoid preservative sugars.
  • Baked apples, pears or fruit salad.

Dairy groups are products made from milk such as yogurt, milk powder, whey, ice cream, gelato, laban, butter and cheese. Dairy products make bones and teeth stronger and provides important nutrients such as Vitamin D, calcium, potassium and protein.

How to prepare calcium rich foods;

  • Select low fat milk or fat free, yogurt and laban. They contain the same amount of calcium available in full fat products.
  • Go for lactose free milk if you are lactose intolerant like Yakult, yogurt, cheese, almond milk, rice milk or calcium fortified soy milk.

Protein Foods Group are all foods made from meat, poultry, eggs, beans and seafood. Protein requirements differ from one person to another depending on their age, gender, physical activities and caloric needs. Protein provide nutrients that are vital for health, repair of muscles, hair and skin and maintenance of your body. These includes Vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium and protein.

Do’s and Don’ts In The Holy Month of Ramadan https://blogs.jerichosplace.com/2019/05/04/dos-and-donts-in-the-holy-month-of-ramadan/ https://blogs.jerichosplace.com/2019/05/04/dos-and-donts-in-the-holy-month-of-ramadan/#comments Sat, 04 May 2019 17:57:03 +0000 http://jerichosplace.com/?p=3736 This 2019, Ramadan confirmed to start on Monday May 6, 2019 despite the moon crescent was not sighted in Saudi Arabia on Saturday evening. Australia was the first country to announce May 6 as the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). It is the 9th month of Hijra or Islamic Calendar and it is considered as the holiest month in the Islamic Religion. Hijra calendar is based on lunar calendar, the timing of the month of Ramadan comes forward by approximately 10 to 12 days every year. This is the month where Muslims fast between dawn and sunset. During fasting, nothing must pass between their lips or mouth.

As a sign of respect to our Muslim brothers and sisters who are fasting, non-Muslims are expected not to eat, drink or smoke in public places during fasting hours. They are free to do so at their homes and specific designated areas. Most countries having majority of Muslim population do impose such restrictions. However, each country has different approach in implementing these restrictions.

The Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates in UAE will continue to open their food court during the month of Ramadan on normal operations basis, but these areas are discreetly enclosed for complete privacy. Non-food court restaurants with mall entry will mostly open only for Iftar (after sunset) and Suhoor (before sunrise) hours, except for hotel restaurants. However, restaurants not located on hotel premises will always remain closed during the fasting hours.

Drinking while driving is illegal, and you should beware about the equivalent penalties. You may end up imprisoned for a month or two or maybe longer if the offense is done especially during Ramadan. Please be noted that the police especially in UAE is authorized to conduct random breath analyzer tests for drivers to check for their alcohol content intake (zero is the only accepted limit).

Consumption of alcohol is generally forbidden in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, State of Kuwait and Sharjah Emirates in UAE at all times. Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, UAE except Sharjah Emirates has permissible drinking laws, but these should be observed in the context of their local law. If you insist on drinking during this month, please ensure that you are authorized license permit holder to purchase alcohol legally.
Extra care must be exercised during Ramadan though you may be a defensive driver. As fasting can be tiring, most people are generally more impatient and have the risk to commit more mistakes at road. This scenario is particularly happening around just before breaking of the fast at sunset.

Majority of Muslim Countries always has strict dress code restrictions. It is expected that during Ramadan, this restriction will be more severely enforced. Men should not wear shorts above their knees and should not go bare-chested on the streets. Women should always refrain from wearing anything that is overly revealing their body, arms and legs or anything that is too tight.

Most of the people habit during Ramadan is to go to bed later or being awake till morning. If you require some documents to be processed at public and government offices, kindly ensure that you have plenty of lead-time. Generally, working hours are reduced by two hours per day so that those fasting employees can go home early, rest during the afternoon and prepare their Iftar foods.

Some areas, like the firing of a cannon gun followed by the call to evening prayers signals that it is time to break the day’s fast. All people who are fasting go to break their fast at sunset. For about an hour after this signal, most shops are closed, and the streets are practically empty.

Always remember to be considerate and be more patient with the people who are fasting by not eating, smoking or drinking in front of them.
