Memes of Philippine Election 2019

The Filipino humor never ends as it is always expected even in critical situation of the country or even on the last 13th of May 2019 election. We witnessed the funny side of Filipinos through “memes” in different campaign scenario of Philippine Election expressed in social media. Some of the memes are funny but others are totally sarcastic and below the belt.

Most of the memes are deformed faces to look like monster, monkey or any popular caricature but some are funny, bully and sarcastic lines featuring the person itself. They add only bubbles of conversation or statement where to deliver their punchlines.

As we analyzed all the memes of election tackle deeply on the desperation of Filipinos on certain aspect of governance. It is not maybe targeting the individual person on the meme but the activity of that person that made him the target of the meme. Filipinos put humor to lighten-up the situation so that another person intended for the meme cannot relate on what they want to say directly (sometimes not good). It is sure that it is not only Filipinos doing the meme but other culture with different context.

The behavior of Filipinos for creating meme is inserting “patama” to the funny lines due to cultural inferiority suffered mostly by those colonized country. This inferiority is still embedded in the Filipino blood until today as manifested in “patama” or “pag-irap (make face)”. This is the condition where the person cannot express themselves openly as they resorted to indirect statement. This is a form of revenge on another person’s statement or action.

The “Patama” or “Pag-irap” is not normal on other culture as they don’t understand this behavior. Other culture requires to be confronted directly or upfront so that they can understand the situation. Then, they will set-up corrective action right there and then. Most Filipinos are different as they are afraid to show themselves or go direct on their statement as to avoid creating argument, maybe it is time to correct this behavior. It does not mean that when you argue or raise a point requires hysterical, physical attack or violence, you can raise your point calmly in a peaceful manner.

Show your lighter side through memes but stop “patama” as it does not help at all!
