The world is uncertain on the fate of COVID-19, everyone is advice to do their fair share of precautionary measures amidst the crisis of Novel Corona Virus. The WHO posted an advice on proper handwashing to avoid contagious diseases. Did anyone notice on how you wash your hands-on daily basis…or you just simply damp it with soap, flush it with water then “done”. This habit was manifested with the first case of COVID-19 when feces of bat came in contact to the mouth of the first patient of Novel Corona Virus then spread the disease after.

As per research, many countries are not aware of proper way of washing hands or using soap for cleaning their hands. Around 38.7% households use soap to clean their hands while the rest are simply using water.

According to study, there are 6 critical times that you should wash your hands-on daily basis to avoid the fecal-oral transmission:

  1. After defecation
  2. After you sneeze or cough into your hands
  3. After cleaning a child’s bottom
  4. Before feeding a child
  5. Before eating food or taking medicines
  6. Before preparing food or handling raw meat, fish, or poultry

These are the steps of proper handwashing from WordPress.Com (About Hand Washing) that can benefit all OFWs and families out there. Please check the illustration for easy reference:

  1. Begin by wetting your hands
  2. Apply liquid soap on to your hands
  3. Rub you hands together using friction at least 20 seconds.
  4. Make sure as you scrub, you interlace your fingers downward.
  5. Wash all surfaces of your hands and wrists
  6. Dry hands on clean paper towels
  7. Discard paper towels into trash container
